It's a New Year and a fresh start, a time when the getting out into the garden can be revitalizing after the pressures of Christmas. With the promise of spring not too far away this can be an ideal time to get back out there or start planning the year ahead from the comfort of your home.

  • Make sure the green house is kept dry and free from pests and disease, ventilate to allow air flow on dry days
  • Towards the end of the month or early February prune Wisteria back to within two or three buds of the main stems. Avoid pruning in hard frosts or snow. (let Country Park prune your climbers, trees and shrubs to exacting standards)
  • Hoe persistent weeds from borders, gravel paths and tubs, avoid using a weed killer at this time of year.
  • Mulch borders, using a variety of mulches and barks (available from Country Park Landscapes)
  • If you are fortunate enough to have moved your outdoor furniture into dry storage this will be an ideal time to check the fittings for rust and spray with a protector such as WD40, tighten bolts and grease lazy Susan’s or metal moving section. Rub down and reapply oil to furniture that may look lack-lustre and require some TLC before spring. (why not consider Country Park Landscapes to store and refurnish your furniture next autumn)
  • It is not too late to aerate a lawn by spiking or with an aerator, however the ground conditions need to free from excessive water, snow and frost so choose the optimum time to carry out this project. (our lawn care service offers individually tailored lawn programmes)
  • Plan your vegetable garden for crop rotation
  • Feed apple and pear trees with Bone meal or Growmore at 70g per m2 (we supply at competitive prices a wide range of fertilizers)
  • Prune apple and pear trees (let Country Park prune your climbers, trees and shrubs to exacting standards)
  • Prune grape vines before the end of the month
  • Water evergreens in pots and containers
  • Finish cutting deciduous hedges before birds start to nest (Country Park landscapes Garden Management offer a wide range or services)
  • Carry out any tree surgery during the next few months (contact us for qualified and insured tree surgery)
  • Turn Compost
  • At this time of year birds may well need more of helping hand than any other time of the year, help them by providing bird food, nuts and fat balls.
