Advice Tips for May 2010

A sudden change in our weather for April accelerated growth rates and budding, although in many respects the season is still quite late. Although it could be argued that the season as it should be, but perhaps that is better left to others to discuss and let history decide!  Many Oaks are now starting to bud out, which if you are a believer in old wives tales - “Oak before the Ash, we are in for a splash” or “Ash before the Oak, we are in for a soak” - you will probably hope that May will be a fine month. However if May continues how it starts I would think we are in for an unsettled period. To find out what the weather is doing, see our weather bulletin at the bottom of the page.  If you are getting out into the garden or simply thinking about It, good or bad weather, here are a few of our tips.

  • Mow lawns weekly, and in some cases twice a week, try to collect the grass where ever possible and ensure the blades are sharp before each cut. Why not let Country Park mow your grass on weekly basis with easy one off monthly payments.
  • Apply spring fertilizers this month, and ideal product would be 20-nitrogen 10-Potash 10-Potassium (NPK) at about 35g per square mt. This will give the grass a well needed boost and invigorate the sward and colour.  Let our team of grass professionals inspect your lawn free of charge and give you a tailored yearly programme.
  • Overseed lawns and top dress bare areas of lawns using fine soils or top dressings. Country Park Landscapes supply a variety of top dressings and soils together with a wide range of grass seed, let us help you in your lawn renovations
  • Feed borders with Fish Blood & Bone 70g – 120g per m2 - we supply Organic Fish Blood & Bone  at competitive prices, just £16.83 for 25 kgs we also supply a wide range of other products and fertilizers
  • Weed kill paths and hard standing areas
  • Check newly planted trees for moisture and weed growth around the base of the tree, feed if required
  • Water containers every day if needed, even if it has rained
  • Feed containers weekly
  • Bring out bedding to harden off, but beware of late frosts
  • Weed borders regularly or weeds will take hold and remove nutrients there for the shrubs
  • Prune spring flowering shrubs after flower such as forsythia
  • Plant up hanging baskets, but keep them in the green house until all risk of frost has gone
  • If you are thinking about garden improvements this year that may include design, new structures, terraces, paths and planting, now is the time to start seriously considering implementing this type of work for completion by the summer. Why not look at our Design page

Weather for May

The first week of May will be a lot cooler than the last week of April, with Temperatures in the south east not reaching above 15c all week. The wind will be from the North / North East. The risk of frost is unlikely due to the wind; however the wind could be damaging to tender plants with gusts between 15 & 22 mph throughout the week. Generally staying Dry and long sunny spells, but don’t put the winter coat away just yet.

The second week of May looks to be a repeat of the first week, with the chance of more rain as low pressure moves in and the North wind still has hold on colder temperatures.

We aim to update our weather weekly, so keep checking back for updates.
