Ponds and Lakes

Construction

Ponds and lakes make an attractive feature to any garden or estate, by definition a mass of water over 6,000.00 square meters (1.5 acres) is classed as a lake, anything under this and it is classed as a pond. Ponds can be constructed either naturally or pre formed depending on the size you require. Many areas of South East England sit on Wealden Clay, this is often a suitable medium to create a natural pond or lake if constructed suitably.

Natural ponds do not always perform correctly if they are below a certain size or if they are not fed with a supply of spring water, land drainage or surface water, therefore it is worth considering all options available when designing your pond.

Ponds and lakes stocked with fish require established planting to create oxygen and habitats that can be used for spawning, retreats and feeding grounds. Other considerations to take into account are water clarity and oxygenating systems or pump cycles for water movement such as water falls or fountains. A well balanced pond can have excellent water clarity and an abundance of wildlife and fish stocks, however this does take time and good maintenance programs.

Spoil is often a great consideration when thinking of building a pond or lake, removing spoil from sites is an ever increasing expense with contractors and designers looking at alternatives for spoil removal. If your garden or estate has suitable space, spoil can be left on site to create land forms, raised banks for planting or turfing that add enhancement to the pond or lake.

Lakes and ponds also require regular maintenance to remove a build of silt, ph level adjustments and plant management. Country Park Landscapes can assist in the maintenance by designing a maintenance program to suit the requirements of the pond or lake. With our partners we can also assist in fish and stock management levels.

Water and water movement within a garden can be an inspiration and delightful addition to any garden. Our designers can meet with you to discuss your requirements from ornamental to wildlife ponds and create a design or give advice on how best to proceed.
