Top dressing is a significant operation of lawn and grass management. Top dressing is the procedure of applying a covering of specially mixed sand and soils to the surface of the lawn. Application rates vary from three – five kilos per square meter, depending if the lawn has been scarified, hollow tined or slit aerated. Materials available range from sand, loam, to compost and organic matter, we will analyse the most suitable treatment depending on the soil type of your lawn and other applications that have been carried out.
Your lawn may have undulations, top dressing with a loam and organic mixture will gradually help iron out these undulations.
Drainage can be improved with the application of a top dressing, especially after hollow tine aeration has been completed. If your garden sits on heavy clay you will suffer from poor drainage, after aerating, hollow cores will be left in the soil which can then be dressed with a suitable free draining dressing. Once the dressing is brushed into the lawn this will greatly improve the drainage.
This type of problem is solved by carrying out the same procedure as "Drainage" but the product applied would be based on an organic and loam top dressing. Organic matter and loamy soils have greater moisture retaining properties, therefore improving the drought resistance of your lawn.
Lawn sand used as a top dressing will help the breakdown of thatch and moss elements within the lawn. Lawn sand will also invigorate the sward and make for a healthier richer lawn.
Thicker lawns are formed with the use of top dressings, the dressing encourages your lawn to produce new shoots resulting in a thicker and denser sward and will reduce the invasion of weeds and moss.
